2022 Kia Rio vs. 2022 Toyota RAV4

The 2022 Kia Rio offers excellent fuel economy and an enjoyable ride, among its many positive attributes. It provides comfortable, agile driving dynamics and an infotainment center that is straightforward.

In comparison, the Toyota Rav4 has a relatively comfortable interior, large cargo area, and offers great fuel economy. Compared to some of its other rivals where compact SUVs are concerned, however, it's not as fun to drive, nor is it quite as upscale.

So, which one is the best choice for you?

Design & Style

The 2022 Kia Rio has an interior that prides itself on simplicity – in a very good way. It presents an easy to use, clean dashboard with audio and climate controls. For a subcompact, the overall interior appearance is sophisticated and mature.

The Toyota Rav4 is considered, by some, to be a bit behind the times where electric vehicles are concerned. It's also pretty traditional in its appearance. The Toyota’s interior design is edged out a bit by the Kia, though it does have a touchscreen display. Some users felt that it wasn't as user-friendly as it could have been, however. Going on a long trip? The long-term interior comfort leaves a bit to be desired in the Toyota.

Technology & Safety

The 2022 Kia Rio offers modern wireless smartphone mirroring options for Android and Apple phones and comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen. Upgrades are available where the infotainment system is concerned. Various safety options are available but some of the key features include lane keep assist and lane departure warning, as well as automated emergency braking and forward collision warning.

In the Toyota Rav4, depending on which model you choose, you can get a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen. Android Auto Ability, Apple CarPlay, and mobile hotspot capability are included. An array of driver assists is available on the Toyota including standard adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, automated emergency braking, and more.

Performance

The 2022 Kia Rio has a continuously variable automatic transmission and offers 120 hp with a 1.6 L inline-four engine. In about 8.6 seconds, you can get from 0 to 60 mph. With its well-tuned suspension and solid structure, it soaks up bumps well.

The Toyota Rav4 has an eight-speed automatic transmission which pairs with a 2.5 L four-cylinder engine that offers 203 hp. Though you now have a choice of all-wheel-drive systems, the front wheel drive remains standard. When called upon to downshift, like during highway passing opportunities, the transmission tends to stumble. During passing attempts it was also a bit noisy.

The Bottom Line

With its straightforward infotainment system, excellent fuel economy, and comfortable, agile driving dynamics, the 2022 Kia Rio is an excellent choice.

The Toyota Rav4 is plagued by a slow-to-operate touchscreen, whiny, sometimes loud powertrain, and a few other setbacks.
