The Incorporated Village of Bay Shore is located within the CDP and is the administrative center. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1683 and became an incorporated village in 1874. Bay Shore was once a popular resort destination and home to members of America's wealthiest families, including the Vanderbilts and Carnegies. The village saw a major economic decline throughout the mid-20th century as it lost its resort appeal and many businesses closed.
