2022 Kia Telluride vs. 2022 Toyota Highlander

The 2022 Kia Telluride and the 2022 Toyota Highlander have many features in common. They are, after all, both midsize SUVs. But while both offer drivers and passengers much in the way of the categories below, there are distinct differences, which we'll illuminate. The following will be a category-by-category comparison of the 2022 Kia Telluride versus the 2022 Toyota Highlander.

Design & Style

The interior of the Kia Telluride is undeniably first-rate. The materials are high-quality, even in the lower trim levels. With a satisfying finish and fit, everything is put together perfectly. The entire design is modern and sleek. The interior ranking for the Kia (8.3) outdid the Highlander’s interior ranking (7.2).

Even the base models of the Toyota Highlander offer interior materials of high quality. Upscale services are used on higher trims, such as leather upholstery (both genuine and synthetic) and wood trim. The Highlander seats up to eight people and has a decent amount of cargo room. Children are possibly the only individuals who would feel comfortable in the third row, however.

Technology & Safety

The 2022 Kia Telluride is equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen as standard. It's a breeze to operate with easy to navigate menus and sharp graphics. Safety ratings of five out of five stars apply in the categories of side crashes and as an overall rating for the Kia.

The infotainment system in the 2022 Toyota Highlander, compared to some rivals, doesn't feel or look particularly modern. It is, however, easy to operate and straightforward. Safety ratings for the Highlander range from acceptable to superior. It gets high marks – five out of five, in fact – in the areas of side crashes and as an overall rating.

Performance

The Kia Telluride outranked the Highlander in the category of performance. For quality and reliability, it also edged out the Highlander. The Kia can haul up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. Thanks to good maneuverability and a well weighted steering wheel, it drives similar to a small crossover. You can expect an estimated 26 miles per gallon on the highway and 20 miles per gallon in the city. In models with all-wheel drive, this drops slightly.

The Highlander produces 185 horsepower, comes standard with a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine, and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 20 city/27 highway MPG and can tow up to 1,500 pounds. While cornering, the Highlander exhibits poised handling and, in general, provides a comfortable ride. Unfortunately, it's not as engaging to drive as it could be due to its numb steering.

The Bottom Line

With the 2022 Kia Telluride’s user-friendly infotainment center, long list of standard features, ample cargo space, and high quality, roomy cabin, it's no wonder it has one of the top spots in the rankings for midsize SUVs. Sleek technology, a large cargo hold, and a well-appointed, spacious cabin serve families, couples, and singles well.

Though the 2022 Toyota Highlander boasts refined interior materials, lots of standard features, and has a potent engine, its third row is reportedly tight and, compared to its competitors, is less fun to drive. As far as midsize SUV rankings go, it is, unfortunately, in the lower third.
